Historically, John C Fremont lost in the election of 1856, whereas Abraham Lincoln won in 1860.
So with a little bit of a push, Fremont wins the Republican nomination in 1860 and eventually the election. Now given that Fremont was a lot more liberal and radical in his approach to slavery, and his nature anyway given that he issued a emancipation proclamation a year before Lincoln, and also put Missouri under martial law - how exactly would the Civil War play out with Fremont as President during the same period that Lincoln was President in the OTL.
Please note: given he is replacing Lincoln in the OTL, yes, Fremont gets reelected in 1864, and yes, he does get assassinated at the end of the Civil War (not necessarily in the same place mind you), and I somehow doubt he would pick Andrew Johnson as his VP....would he have Hamlin though?
What would Fremont's legacy look like, if it was a mixture of his and Lincoln's combined?
