The Paris revolution: General Degoutte’s military coup (PART 2)

  1. 1925 - Alliance with Fascist Italy:
    • Seeking to strengthen its position internationally, General Degoutte's regime forms an alliance with Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini. The aim is to enhance military capabilities and secure support against common adversaries.
  2. 1930 - Political Tensions with the UK:
    • Escalating political tensions between France and the United Kingdom arise over colonial disputes and conflicting interests in Europe and the Mediterranean. Diplomatic maneuvering and military build-ups on both sides raise concerns of potential conflict.
  3. 1933 - Rise of the Tri-Nation Axis:
    • General Degoutte solidifies France's alignment with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler.
    • The formation of the Tri-Nation Axis between France, Italy, and Germany reshapes the geopolitical landscape of Europe, alarming other major powers.
  4. 1936 - Spanish Civil War Erupts:
    • The Spanish Civil War begins as General Francisco Franco leads a coup against the Spanish Republic, plunging the country into a brutal conflict.
    • France initially maintains neutrality but secretly provides support to Franco's Nationalist faction, viewing them as a potential ally against communism.
  5. 1936 - French Escalation in the Spanish Civil War:
    • As the Spanish Civil War intensifies, France increases its support for the Nationalist forces, sending military advisors and providing material assistance.
    • This deepens the divide between France and its Western allies, particularly the United Kingdom, which supports the Republican side in Spain.
  6. 1938 - Joining the Rome-Berlin Axis:
    • With tensions rising in Europe, General Degoutte formally aligns France with the Rome-Berlin Axis, solidifying the Tri-Nation Axis.
    • This move further isolates France from its former allies and raises concerns about the spread of fascist influence across the continent.
  7. 1938 - Formation of the Tri-Nation Axis:
    • The alliance between France, Italy, and Germany, known as the Tri-Nation Axis, becomes a powerful force in European politics.
    • General Degoutte's regime consolidates its power domestically while pursuing an assertive foreign policy aimed at expanding French influence and territory.

An alliance between France and Germany is impossible.

For Hitler, France was the natural enemy on the continent, England could have the seas but Germany could have no rival on the continent.

I quickly see active support for the Czechs and Poles against it

In this case, france became a military regime, and allied itself with Benit Mussolini‘s Italy, and was then forced into the Rome-Berlin-Paris axis

But one of Hitler's drivers was to get revenge on and humiliate France - hence insisting on signing the armistice it the WW1 site, setting the armistice terms more or less the same as had been imposed on Germany.

There's probably scope for a Molotov-Ribbentrop style arrangement, but that would need justification of what it's supposed to achieve. Bear in mind that Italy and Spain weren't exactly pro-nazi despite being fascist states, right wing militarist or fascist France may well still be very anti-nazi or anti-German.

It's probably more realistic to see a fascist France working more closely with Italy, and Britain accepting them both as allies against nazism (since OTL Britain wanted Italy on board if possible). A more militaristic France would likely be more opposed to German remilitarisation and slap down breaches of the Treaty, with the added confidence of Italian pressure on Austria. So fascist France could well lead to Hitler as an annoying wannabe who got sidelined gor his extremism.
