To answer the original poster's question, I'd suggest Dean Koontz' "Lightning."

I'd recommend it for the simple fact that it avoids most alternate history cliches. It's an alternate history that focuses on the characters, and I don't regret having read it. It's not Just Another WWII Alternate.

That's startlingly good, Khazar. I could see it benefiting from some of the more recent studies on secondary burning effects pointed out earlier in this thread, but that would deal with climate effects only. If you haven't read what's behind that link, I'd definitely recommend it.
