he actually ran for president in 1980 on a pro life platform and from what i recall did pretty well in the AIP california primary. my headcanon is that because carter isn’t around and the religious protestant right isn’t as strong abortion stays a “catholic issue” and downey is part of a failed attempt for a dying AIP to capitalize on that
