US Balkanization- Long Term Russian Hyperpower

The US only really entered European power games with its unconditional loans in 1915 or so. Without them the war ends years earlier and Russia would be better off with a softer loss, in manpower and territory, the latter part being in truth more of a blessing than a burden. But the biggest...

What if the German Empire had no colonies -> Better performance in WWI?

They got some fighting experience out of all the rebellions in Namibia and Tanzania, without it they'd be in the same position as Austria-Hungary, not having fought a war in half a century. I can't possibly see how this would be a positive thing.

What if California was an independent country?

It's on par with a bunch of those inland states that no European can name.

What if California was an independent country?

Before the large scale military investments in the 30s and the Cold War California was an underpopulated strip of land at the wrong end of the continent. An independent one would suffer the same fate, there's no inherent reason why it should prosper.

Could fascism survive to the present without WW2?

Plenty of small states ran or are runnign militarized societies, most notable examples would be North Korea or Israel. And wanting to keep the colonies puts Salazar on the fascism scale at the same level as de Gaulle or Churchill. Such things can't be the metric how to measure it, that just...

Could fascism survive to the present without WW2?

Salazars Portugal and Dollfuß's Austria didn't even have the militarism part.

    Screw the Latin script

A prolonged occupation of Europe by the Mongols should do the trick. Maybe by one of the Khans who converted to Islam or one of the Eastern churches who don't use the Latin script.

Alternate Ancient Toponyms brought back in the 19th/20th centuries?

Austria nearly went with "Noricum" after WW1. If you look up the etymologies of European rivers you quickly notice that it's all Celtic already.

AHC: Longest possible continuity for a settled agricultural society

The premise of these kinds of threads are always flawed as they ignore lokal change of culture and customs. For Egypt we can easily designate a number of big ones, such as Akhenatens mono/henotheism experiment, the Hyksos occupation or Thurmose III under whom the until then reclusive kingdom...

The Effects of the Roman Industrial Revolution on Christianity

"Industrial Revolution" also means that the state takes a firmer grip of the entire society, including its culture and religion. State Shinto in Japan, Kulturkampf in Germany, Kemalism in Turkey, Cultural Revolution in China, French Revolution in France etc. Christianity, being a foreign...

Lichtenstein Alaska: Was it a real proposal?

The relevant part says "Also that the Russian Tsar in the year 1867 offered Liechtenstein Alaska for purchase is something known by few".

What if India won the war of 1962 against China?

Take a look at google maps, the border is impassable, only a single gravel path at 4500m above sea level. Trying to move the border to either side would at best end up like the Ottoman Caucasus campaign.

    A better Austro-Hungarian Navy for WW1

Well, the French navy would be hopelessly outmatched by the combined Italo-Austro-Hungarian navy in size and possibly quality as well (ww1 time is not the high watermark of the French navy). The Russan navy too is a non issue, especially after sinking off the coast of Korea. "What could possibly...

    A better Austro-Hungarian Navy for WW1

The job of the navy was to keep the Adriatic as Viennas personal bath tub as a fleet in being, which it did well enough. There's no improvement on that unless you want to expand the mission.

Domestic and economic situation in France that lost WWI

The Italians did that despite winning. Stab in the back myths are fairly common, the French did that already for 2 Napoleons before, why stop now?

Was There Any Point Italy Could've Beaten Austria-Hungary In A War?

Few problems with that idea, namely that a) dutch harbors were more important to A-H than Triest was as mediterranean trade had been meaningless for a long time and b) the actual merchant fleet of A-H was not worth mentioning, British or German ships that do the heavy lifting can not be blockaded.

Was There Any Point Italy Could've Beaten Austria-Hungary In A War?

In a hypothetical 1950s or 60s showdown it would be possible, tank technology and air power at the time are sufficiently developed to negate the defensive advantage of the Alps. Otherwise no. AH is significantly bigger, more populous, indistrialized and better defended through natural...

What would have happened if a random commoner had addressed the British monarch by their first name?

I'm a bit amazed at the focus on caning here, personally i'd expect banishment to the colonies to be the most likely way to adress this, it was a very popular punishment for all kinds of criminals during the colonial era.

How big of a threat would a united Germania be to Rome?

Germany in Roman times had around 4 million people on an area far bigger than todays Germany. An agricultural state can't put 30 % of its population under arms like barbarians can, so unless they multiply and cut down their defensive trees and bushes to make room for more fiels you'll have a far...

What would have happened if a random commoner had addressed the British monarch by their first name?

Caning was practiced in schools until the 80s, if it's good enough for kids it can't be bad for deliquents either.
